Mission
tyler ashley creates theatrically charged atmospheres and sweat-provoking movement, engaging his audience in a mediated self-discovery. Mining outbursts of humanity for ugliness, drama, color, and moments of awakening, Ashley focuses on the spectrum of the human condition—from mundane everyday occurrences to transformative rights of passage.
Making a choice to value instinct over clarity, Ashley isolates each work within specific thematic lenses as a tool to develop a fresh vocabulary and set of aesthetics for each new piece. Threading the movement that develops from these constructs through theatrical influences and virtuosic body impact, Ashley's work forges intimate communities out of the audience’s revelations.
Work
quintet:untitled
quintet:untitled will be reconstructed Saturday March 5, 2011 at 8pm as a part of AUNTS Regular. Please visit http://auntsisdance.com/portfolio.html for more info.
quintet:untitled explores the battling layers of self and the cyclical nature of human behavior. Through a confrontation between the performers and the invisible forces that dominate their schizophrenic minds, tyler ashley exposes the multiple personalities inherent in all of us.
quintet:untitled premiered in full at Dixon Place, July 2010 and was performed by Tyler James Ashley, Michael Ingle, Kris Seto, and Rakia Seaborn. Iterations of this piece have also been performed by Lillie De, Sarah Donnelly, Jackie Carlson, and Saifan Shmerer. This piece has also been presented at VIP(arty) and AUNTS.
oraculum, visio, somnium
oraculum, visio, somnium will premiere in full at The Tank Summer 2011.
In oraculum, visio, somnium, tyler ashley explores the world of dreams; the circumstances and sensations we experience while sleeping and the goals we aim to achieve while awake. Using athletic dance, universal gestures, and original text, Ashley provokes the audience with a reflective presentation of the two dreamworlds colliding.
oraculum, visio, somnium previewed at Green Space Studio and was originally performed by Tyler James Ashley, Sunita Mani, Rakia Seaborn, and Tatiana Stewart.

Born and raised in Topeka, Kansas, Michael was a shy tyke who loved drawing, collecting things and playing soccer. He began dancing while at the University of Kansas where he earned a BFA in Art History. Since moving to New York City in 2007, he has had the good fortune of working with delightful artists like Ellie Goudie-Averill, Emily Pope-Blackman, Paul Singh and Sarah Young as well as creating and performing his own work. Presently, Michael has the glorious privilege of working with these awesome folks: Hilary Easton, Laura Peterson, Dawn Poirier, Deganit Shemy, Megan Spenger, Christopher Williams and, of course, Mr. Ashley. (thanks to my peeps for standing by me/putting up with me. it is all for you, my loves)
